EDITING video feedback: learner response

video:

1) Type up your feedback/comments from your teacher.

WWW:

- Great opening shot – fade in

- Match-on action – door opening twice, sitting down, walk through doors

- Cross-cutting technique used

Handheld tracking shot

- Simple narrative

- Detailed planning

EBI:

A more coherent and developed narrative

2) Type up your feedback from fellow students.

3) Now reflect on your video. Did you meet the brief and successfully include the three key editing aspects we have learned?

I had successfully met parts of the brief including match-on-action; when my character walks through the door and it films from the other angle as soon as I enter, and then another scene of match-on-action when I sit down. I slightly followed the shot reverse shot rule as I filmed scenes of the characters talking which also involved the 180° rule. However, I could have implemented a longer scene of it which would have made my video more stronger in terms of the three key editing aspects.

4) What were the strengths and weaknesses of your final film? Write a detailed analysis picking out specific shots, edits and any other aspect of film language you think is relevant.

One of the strengths of my final film was the use of match-on-action, such as when my character walks through the door and when they sit down, as the movement flows smoothly between shots. The fade-ins and out transitions added a more professional feel to the film. I also used shot reverse shot during dialogue scenes while following the 180° rule, which made the conversation easy to understand. The handheld tracking shot and cross-cutting added a sense of variety, and the narrative and detailed planning helped the film progress. However, another weakness of my final film is that the narrative could have been more developed. Extending some scenes, especially with the shot reverse shot as it was quite short, and this would have made the film stronger overall. I could have also added more editing techniques like jump cutting and dissolve which would have amplified the film.

5) Learner response: what aspect of editing did you find most difficult? What have you learned from this process that will help you when you start the actual coursework later this year?

I’d say the match-on-action took quite a bit of tries to film and get it right and even with the actual editing it had taken some time to get the shots to line up on the spot for a smoother scene. I had to be precise so the scene looked realistic. - However it will get easier as I practice more, which will help me for my coursework as it will develop my skills and knowledge later this year.
